Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

Buhl grants in excess of: $1,500,000

An architectural gem on Pittsburgh’s North Side, the Children’s Museum is the first LEED certified “green” Children’s Museum constructed in the United States.  The impressive campus includes both dramatic new construction and integration of two Pittsburgh treasures: the old North Side Post Office and the original Buhl Planetarium.  A winner of the American Institute of Architects’ National Honor Award for Architecture and a host of numerous other national and international awards, the Children’s Museum houses a variety of fun and educational children and family activities that draw nearly 200,000 visitors a year.  The $28 million capital expansion project that integrated the original Buhl Planetarium was aided by a $1.5 million contribution from the Buhl Foundation. More recently, Buhl has provided support for museum programming as well as to enhance park space adjoining the museum. The Children’s Museum is not only a North Side anchor incorporating the historic Buhl Planetarium building, it is also a creative and innovative institution that reflects Buhl’s priorities of science and math education, economic development, quality of life and youth development.
